On the Disappearance of Srila Bhakti Srirup Sidhdhanti Maharaj (from Sri Chaitanya Vani)

Article, Sreela Bhakti Promode Puri Goswami Maharaj

This is the English and Hindi translation of an article originally written in Bengali language and published in Sree Chaitanya Vani on the disappearance of Srila Bhakti Srirup Sidhdhanti Maharaj, one of the dear most disciple of Srila Bhakti Sidhdhant Saraswati Prabhupad.

  • Srila Prabhupad had a strong desire to print and preach the word for word meaning (anvaya), Bangla translation and the Gaudiya-bhasya (commentary according to Gaudiya line of thought) of the Govinda-bhasya by Srila Baladeva Vidyabhusan Prabhu and those of Isa, Kena, Katha, Prasna, Mundaka, Mundukya, Traittiriya, Aitareya, Chhandogya, Brihadaranyaka, Svetasvatara and Gopala-tapani Shruti Upanishads. Pujyapad Sidhdhanti Maharaj took the vow to fulfill the desire of Parampujyapad Sri Srila Prabhupad and have done a great service to the entire Gaudiya community by fulfilling it. By that he has attracted Srila Prabhupad’s blessings in abundance.

Pujyapad Maharaj appeared on Kartik Shukla-panchami, 1313 Bangabda, 22nd October, 1906 in Barishala district of East Bengal (current Bangladesh) in a family devoted to the service of the Lord. In 1331 Bangabda (1924), around the month of Magh (December-January) he came to Kolkata and to the lotus feet of Srila Prabhupad. He got Mahamantra and Mantra Deeksha from Srila Prabhupad on the auspicious occasion of Gaura-purnima in the month of March, 1924. Because of his attraction for Lord Krishna, he came to join the Math at a very early age when he was a student. But that time his Guruvarga advised him to go back home and complete his studies. Accepting the order of Guruvarga, he went back to his house and continued his studies. Immediately after completing his studies, he came back to Math in 1334 Bangabda, in the month of Phalgun, February, 1928 and got fully engaged in the service of his Gurudev. His Gurudev and other devotees became extremely pleased on him seeing his sincere service efforts. Because of his Gurudev’s satisfaction for his service efforts, he got the following three titles as Gaura-ashirvada on behalf of the Nabadwipa Dhama Pracharini Sabha.

    1. ‘Upadeshaka’ in 1854 Shakabda (1932)
    2. ‘Mahopadeshaka’ in 1855 Shakabda (1933)
    3. ‘Vidyavagish’ in 1857 Shakabda (1935)
His Brahmachari name was Sri Siddha-svarupa Brahmachari. He used to go for preaching, along with senior and proficient Tridandi-sanyasis like Tridandi Swami Srimad Bhakti Pradeep Tirtha Maharaj, Tridandi Swami Srimad Bhakti Vivek Bharti Maharaj, Tridandi Swami Srimad Bhakti Rakshak Sridhar Maharaj and Tridandi Swami Srimad Bhakti Hridaya Van Maharaj, to different places of Bengal, Bihar, Utkala, Madras, Andhrapradesh and Western India. He also has done many preaching activities along with Nityalilapravistha Parampujyapad Tridandi Swami Srimad Bhakti Dayita Madhava Maharaj. Subsequently, by the grace of Hari, Guru and Vaishnava, he emerged as a proficient speaker. Because of his speaking the doctrines of the scriptures, fearlessly and proficiently, many sincere seekers of actual truth became strongly attracted to him. Some of the ill-minded persons who could not accept the pure devotion doctrines, feeling their ideology being attacked by Srila Maharaj’s strong words, tried to jeopardize his preaching activities in many ways. Despite such opposition and repugnance, he never took a back step on preaching the gospel of pure devotion. This attracted Srila Prabhupad’s abundant grace on him.

In 1941, Pujyapad Siddha-svarupa Brahmachari accepted Tridand-sanyas-vesh from one of our God-brothers and was given the name Tridandi Swami Srimad Bhakti Srirup Sidhdhanti Maharaj.

Other than Kolkata’s ‘Saraswata Ashram and Mission’, he has two Math; one at Sri Dhama Nabadwip and the other is at Sri Kshetra. In all the three Math, Sri Sri Guru Gauranga Radha Govinda Jiyu is being worshiped and on the walls of the Math, attractive work depicting the pastimes of Lord Sri Gauranga, Sri Krishna and Sri Ram has been done. This presentation invokes the remembrance of those particular pastimes in the hearts of sincere votaries.

Pujyapad Maharaj, on last 5 Padmanabh (499 Gaurabda), 17 Aswin (1392 Bangabda), 4 October, (1985 Khristabda), Friday, Krishna-shashti Tithi at night, 1:10 a.m. this minute at his ‘Sri Saraswat Gaudiya Asan and Mission’, Kolkata 29B, Hazra Road, while remembering the lotus feet of Sri Sri Guru Gauranga Gandharvika Giridhari Jiyu, amidst the Namsankirtan by separation grief stricken Math-sevaka, took the absolute shelter of ashoka-abhaya-amritadhara lotus feet of his worshipable object. My God-brothers are making their divine journey towards the lotus feet of Nityalilapravistha Sri Srila Gurudeva and attaining their eternal service one by one. Each one of them possessed unique divine qualities. There is no replacement for any one of them. The Gaudiya Vaishnava world has become bereft of the shining gems. Our Pujyapad Sidhdhanti Maharaj was one of the shining gems on the earth. Today not having his darshan fills the heart with intense separation grief.

    duḥkha-madhye kona duḥkha haya gurutara?
kṛṣṇa-bhakta-viraha vinā duḥkha nāhi dekhi para
    (Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita Madhya 8.248)

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu asked, “Of all kinds of distress, what is the most painful?”

Sri Ramananda Raya replied, “Apart from separation from the devotee of Krishna, I know of no unbearable unhappiness.”
