Day 18 : Fourth Yam

Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj

10:34am to 3:22pm. O Supreme Lord! I have got no desire for wealth, manpower or erudition (desire for deceitful Trivarga— worldly piety, money and lust or even to merge myself with the Impersonal Formless Brahma, i.e. ‘Mukti’— salvation, which is more deceitful). My only prayer is to get causeless one-pointed devotion to You.

  • Madhyahna kalia bhajan - Mid-day worship – Worship with taste (Ruchi Bhajan)

nāma sādhakera ahaituki kṛṣṇa bhakti binā anya kāmanā nahi

na dhanaṁ na janaṁ na sundarīṁ
    kavitāṁ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye
    mama janmani janmanīśvare
    bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukḥ tvayi
    (4rd Verse of Sri Shikshastaka)

O Supreme Lord! I do not desire for wealth, manpower or erudition, desire for Trivarga—dharma, artha, kama, nor ‘mukti’ desire for salvation. My only prayer is to get causeless one-pointed, uninterrupted devotion to You.

According to your prayer Lord will bestow fruit to you. The prayer should issue from the heart. From the heart you submit your prayer, Supreme Lord will fulfill that prayer. It should be from the core of the heart. Clearly you have to say from the heart. Not only simply words, Supreme Lord is ‘bhava grahi Janardhan, He is not bhasha grahi. Supreme Lord will not give any value to the words if there is no inner desire for that.

gṛha dravya śiṣya paśu dhānya ādi dhana
strī putra dāsa dāsī kuṭumbādi jana
    kāvya alaṅkāra ādi sundarī kavitā
    pārthiva-viṣaya madhye e saba vāratā

Any kind of desire for one’s own physical and mental interest of the subtle body and the gross body, every thing is ‘vishay’. And everything will be helpful for service if it is for the satisfaction of Krishna.

ei saba pāibāra āśā nāhi kari
śuddha-bhakti deha more kṛṣṇa kṛpā kari

What is the difference between Suddha-bhakti(Pure devotional service) and Viddha bhakti(Mixed devotional service)? A person is performing bhajan and also showing devotion externally but inside there is some other desire. He cries also and expresses other symptoms. We have heard about the Medinipur Math’s instance. Medinipur is a town in Midnapur district. There in Shyamananda Gaudiya Math where many devotees come for darshan. One day one mataji cried very much in the math and all became worried. Devotees tried to pacify her saying Lord will surely grace her and inquired about the reason for her crying. After being consoled for a while she told that when she saw the babaji in the math who had beard and was serving as pujari she remembered her dear goat which died a few days before and she cried. Is this bhakti? Just that the eyes shed tears does not indicate that it is for the Lord.

From the inner core of heart that sort of desire and separation grief when there will be, then uttering of the Name will come from the heart and tears will roll down. For any kind of loss in this world if we weep, that weeping is not for God. We may come near God, we may weep for some sort of mundane loss in this world. We are weeping for that and we are submitting our prayer to Supreme Lord for fulfilling that desire. This is not bhakti. Outside tears do not prove that we have got bhakti. That should be from the core of the heart for His sake, for the Supreme Lord’s satisfaction. Then that will be tear, and that sort of tear is different.

    premera svabhāva yāṅhā premera sambandha
sei māne kṛṣṇe mora nāhi bhakti-gandha

Indication of Midday Pastimes of Radha-Krsna

A hint has been given here about the mid-day pastimes of Radha Krsna.

    madhyāhne ‘nyonya saṁgodita vividha-vikārādi-bhūṣāpramugdhau
    vāmyotkaṇṭhātilolau smaramakha lalitā dyāli-narmāptaśātau
    dolāraṇyāmbu-vaṁśī-hṛti-rati-madhupānārka-pūjādi-līlau
    rādhā-kṛṣṇau satṛṣṇau parijana-ghaṭayā sevyamānau smarāmi
    (Sri Govinda-lilamrta)

At mid-day the ecstatic feelings that manifest by the union of Radha Krsna are the highest and cannot be found at any other time. All the ecstatic feelings of highest order including Astasattvik-vikar – eight principal ecstatic feelings, thirty three kinds of other subordinate ecstatic feelings – sancari, all kinds of highest sweet inciting transcendental ecstatic feelings are manifested in Radha-kunda. Some extraordinary ecstatic feelings have been mentioned here. ‘Vamya’—crookedness of prema, external expression of rudeness, harshness is there but inside actually just the reverse—which is inexplicable.’Utkantha’—supreme eagerness to get contact with the object of love, the joking words(parihas) of Lalita Sakhi and other gopis are all for the pleasure of Radha-Krsna. In addition to these there are innumerable pastimes like swinging ceremony of Radha-Krsna (Dola), pleasant strolling in the forest (vana-vihar), water sports in ponds and rivers (jala-keli), stealing of flute (vamsi-haran), and other transcendental amorous pastimes(rati-krida), drinking of sweet honey (madhu-pana), worship of Sun-God (surya-puja), etc all for the pleasure of Radha Krsna. There are separate groves of sakhis and there are pastimes of sleep also and other feelings like mana—jealous pride which prevents the lover and beloved to meet freely, pranaya, rati—attachment, fondness; etc. In mana the tears flow so much that they form pools and lakes, as in Mana-sarovar. But our position is that if we shed tears to fill a vessel we will be finished. But Mana-sarovar is transcendental and it appeared from transcendental eyes. If we get a touch of it we will attain prema. Everything is transcendental there. It is not like of the material world. There, how much ever be mana, pranaya, tears, no one dies, it will be like death. There will be so much separation grief, blazing fire of separation grief, but one will not die. Such is the stage and in that there is great bliss. As much attachment is there to Krsna that much bliss is there. Even in separation grief there is bliss, the more deeper the absorption in grief the more bliss. Mahaprabhu made this pastime in Gambhira in Purushottam Dhama in the end.
