Day 12: First Yaam

Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj

3:22am to 5:46am. Chanting of the Holy Name Śrī Kṛṣṇa, completely, loudly in the company of devotees and without tenfold offences, which can bestow seven attainments—viz. cleansing of the mind-mirror, extinguishing of the forest fire of birth, death and threefold afflictions, bestowing eternal soothing benefit like moonlight, life of spiritual learning i.e. awakening of the real self, increasing of the ocean of bliss, bestowing at every step sweet taste of complete transcendental ambrosia, holy immersion of body-mind-real self—be supremely glorified.

  • ata eva namābhāse sarva pāpa vināṣa āra samsara kṣaya

    Therefore glow of the Holy Name can destroy all sins and our worldly bondage.

    taṁ nirvyājam bhaja guṇa-nidhe pāvanaṁ pāvanānāṁ
    śraddhā-rajyan-matir atitarām uttamaḥ-śloka-maulim
    prodyann antaḥ-karaṇa-kuhare hanta yan-nāma-bhānor
    ābhāso ‘pi kṣapayati mahā-pātaka-dhvānta-rāśim

    That person is richly endowed with all good qualities is addressed as guna-nidhe who has got the aptitude to do Krishna-nāma, Who is the redeemer of all redeemers and is worshiped by emancipated souls, realized souls and who is crown of all the avataras, ‘uttama-sloka-mauli’. Sri Krishna-nāma is supreme, topmost, with firm faith and without deceitfulness, without hypocrisy and immediately with simple-heartedness, one should chant Harināma.

    Here one thing you should have to remember. Yes, it is true, one who is richly endowed with all good qualities is addressed as guna-nidhe because he has got the aptitude to do Krishna-nāma, Supreme Redeemer of all redeemers. He is the crown of all avataras. But in Krishna-nāma there is consideration of ten fold offences. Confidential. If you commit ten fold offences then you cannot do nāmābhāsa. How you can be rescued in this Kaliyuga when you have come to this world? Speciality of this is Gauranga Mahaprabhu has appeared, Nityananda Prabhu has appeared. So by uttering the name of Nityananda and Gauranga there is no consideration of any offence. Even if any one has committed offences he will also be rescued, but you should utter the name Nityananda Gauranga not as an incarnation name, then you will not get the actual fruit. Supreme Lord, combined manifestation of RadhaKrishna is Gauranga Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu is equal to Balaram, then you will get highest holy name for your benefit in Gaur Nityananda.

    Gaur Nityananda name has to be uttered with faith. There is consideration of offence in the utterance of the names of RadhaKrishna but not in the utterance of Gaur Nityananda's name. But if we consider Him not as Lord and consider Him as a Mahabhagavat, a pure devotee, then it will not happen. But if we consider Mahaprabhu incarnation of the combined form of RadhaKrishna and Nityananda is Balaram, and with faith utter the names of Gauranga Nityananda then we attain our benefit.

    Gauranga Mahaprabhu manifested the Radha Kunda which was hidden from external vision and indicated this is Radha kunda and this is Shyama Kunda which were unmanifest. So we need His mercy.

    Just by nāmābhāsa we can attain our welfare, but the chanting should be without deceit and immediately with a feeling of urgency. If we tend to postpone it saying I will do later, then when it will be possible, after death? nāmābhāsa, the glow of the Holy Name has been compared to the the glow of Sun light at dawn entering into the cave of the heart will destroy all great sins and nescience.

    Only glow of the Holy Name, of Pure Name, Complete Name, or Suddha Actual Name, because there is no relation, without relation you cannot do śuddha-nāma, real Name will not be manifested. So the Name which is chanted with no offences, but without relation, then you can do nāmābhāsa. The glow of the Holy Name will descend in your tongue, then it will enter into the cave of your heart and destroy all great sins and nescience.

    parama pāvana kṛṣṇa tānhānra charaṇa,
    niskapata śraddhā saha karaha bhajan,
    jānra nāma suryābhās antare praveśi,
    dhvaṁsa kare mahāpāp andhakārarāśi,
    ei śikṣāṣṭake kahe kṛṣṇalīlā-kram,
    ihāte bhajan krame līlāra udgam

    If you want to manifest or want to have realization of transcendental pastimes of RadhaKrishna you have to go through Sikshastaka written by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu very carefully. Then you will have the opportunity of entering into that transcendental realm. Eight verses are there. Very carefully you have to go through these.

    prathame prathama śloka bhaja kichu din,
    dvitīya ślokete tabe hauta pravīṇ
    chāri śloke kramaśaḥ bhajana pakkva kara,
    pañcam ślokete nija siddha deha vara

    Each verse has got importance. Only eight verses, but they can give everything. So you have to give concentration and think about all the verses. In the 5th verse when you do it correctly then you will realize your own realized self. It is stated by Supreme Lord Sri Krishna, that will be manifested. After that you can enter into these pastimes.

    ei śloke siddhadehe rādhāpadāśraya,
    ārambha kariyā krame unnati udaya,

    Without taking shelter to the lotus feet of Radharani you will not be able to enter into these pastimes.

    chaya śloka bhajite anartha dure gela,
    tabe jāna siddhadehe adhikāra haila,

    How you can understand whether you rightly uttered the name of Krishna or rightly practiced this eight verses? If you do it rightly then all these eight ecstatic feelings will be revealed, asta-sattvika-vikar stated in 6th Verse ‘nayanaṁ galad-aśru-dhārayā vadanaṁ gadgada-ruddhayā girā pulakair nicitaṁ vapuḥ kadā tava nāma-grahaṇe bhaviṣyati’. While doing Harināma not a drop of tear comes, then how? It should not be to show to others, but will manifest naturally.

    tabe jāna siddhadehe adhikāra haila,
    adhikāra nā labhiyā siddhadeha bhāve,
    viparjya buddhi janme śaktira abhāve

    When you will not be entitled to get the realization of your realized transcendental form and if you want to enter into this pastimes of RadhaKrishna, it will have reversal results. So very carefully you have to proceed.

    sāvdhāne krama dhara yadi siddhi cāo,
    sādhura carita dekhi śuddha buddhi pāo,
    siddhadeha peye krame bhajana karile,
    aṣṭakāla sevāsukha anāyāse mile,
    śikṣāṣṭaka cinta kara smaraṇa kīrtan,
    krame aṣṭakāla-sevā habe uddīpana,
    sakala anartha jābe pābe premadhana,
    caturvarga phalguprāya habe adarśana

    If you have got all other ulterior desires, even emancipation, you cannot enter into these pastimes. You should be well-established in the teachings of Sikshastaka.

    ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ
    bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇaṁ
    śreyaḥ-kairava-candrikā-vitaraṇaṁ
    vidyā-vadhū-jīvanam
    ānandāmbudhi-vardhanaṁ
    prati-padaṁ pūrṇāmṛtāsvādanaṁ
    sarvātma-snapanaṁ
    paraṁ vijayate śrī-kṛṣṇa-saṅkīrtanam

    You can get all attainments, principal seven kinds of attainments you can get. Cleansing of the mirror of the heart, extinguishing the forest fire of birth, death and threefold afflictions, bestowing eternal soothing benefit like moonlight, life of spiritual learning i.e. awakening of the real self, increasing of the ocean of bliss, bestowing at every step sweet taste of complete transcendental ambrosia, and thoroughly cleanses and cools one’s body, mind and real self. All glories to Sri Krishna Sankirtan!!

    saṅkīrtana haite pāpa-saṁsāra-nāśana
    citta-śuddhi, sarva-bhakti-sādhana-udgama
    kṛṣṇa-premodgama, premāmṛta-āsvādana
    kṛṣṇa-prāpti, sevāmṛta-samudre majjana
    (Chaitanya Charitamrita Antya 20.13-14)

    “By performing congregational chanting of the Hare Krsna mantra, one can destroy the sinful condition of material existence, purify the unclean heart and awaken all varieties of devotional service. The result of chanting is that one awakens his love for Krsna and tastes transcendental bliss. Ultimately, one attains the association of Krsna and engages in His devotional service, as if immersing himself in a great ocean of love.”

    Meditation on Krishna’s awakening pastimes:

    niśante kirtane kuñja bhaṅga kare dhyana
    krame krame citta lagne rasera vidhān

    Meditation on Krishna’s transcendental pastimes have to be done along with Kirtan. Earlier we have heard the glories of Kirtan. Everything is there within the Name, Name, form, qualities and pastimes of the Lord, and when the heart is cleansed, in a pure heart it self-manifests, reveals itself. Still it is said here, mind is the cause of our bondage and is also the cause of liberation. After recitation and contemplation on Sikshastakam and practicing together with Nama kirtan, then follows meditation on the transcendental pastimes of Krishna.

    At the close of the night you have to meditate on the awakening of RadhaKrishna, at the close of the night, at dawn through Kirtan. Then in the Name everything is there. When you will do correctly, utter the name within the Name there is form, rupa, transcendental qualities, personal associates and pastimes everything will be manifested, revealed within your heart.

    rātryante trastavṛnderita bahu-vira-vaibodhitau kirasārī
    padyair-hṛdhyair api sukha-śayanād-utthitau tau sakhibhiḥ
    dṛṣṭau hṛṣṭau tadātvoditarati-lalitau kakkhaṭīgīḥ saśaṅkau
    rādhā-Krishnau satṛṣṇāv api nija-nija dhāmnyāpta talpau smarāmi

    Apprehending day-break Vrinda Devi sends Suk-Sarika and other birds to start chirping to awaken RadhaKrishna. This pastime of sleeping of RadhaKrishna is to give service opportunity to the devotees. There is no tamo gun there, like us whose mind gets disturbed without sufficient sleep. All the gopis present there keep guard throughout the night so that no one disturbs the sleep of RadhaKrishna. For them service itself is rest. To engage in the service of Supreme Lord and His personal associates there is actual rest is there. We want physical rest. We have got this sort of disqualification, drawbacks. In transcendental realm their form is spiritual form, they make the pastimes of sleep of RadhaKrishna so that others can get the scope for service. And at the close of the night, Vrinda Devi at proper time first sent all the birds. Of them, are the female parrot and the male parrot. Male parrot is singing the glories of Krishna and female parrot singing the glories of Radharani and there is competition in very sweet voice. Male parrot is Suk, he is not an ordinary bird. They have got transcendental form, realized form to serve their object of worship. They are not ordinary birds. They sing the glory of Krishna. By hearing that the supporters of Krishna become very much satisfied, oh our Krishna has so many qualities more than Radharani. And Sarika the female parrot sings the glories of Radharani more than Krishna. Then the supporters of Radharani’s group are satisfied and the supporters of Krishna are discouraged. But again Suk will sing more than Radharani’s. In this way there is competition and in very sweet voice so that by hearing that RadhaKrishna will automatically open their eyes, not forcibly. By hearing that very sweet voice Radharani desires that and automatically opens Her eyes. Krishna is not opening, why? Krishna’s actual counter-part is Radharani. So when Radharani opens, Krishna has already opened His eyes through Radharani, first Radharani, then Krishna. Yet, here Krishna makes this pastime of closing the eyes, why? All the gopis did not allow a female monkey because her voice is very harsh. She wants to serve, you are unable to awaken Krishna, so let me do the sound. Then Krishna will awaken. No No, Your sound is very harsh. You are not allowed. Then she becomes very much disheartened. Krishna is knowing, why are you not giving her permission for service, I shall not open My eyes. Ultimately they are forced, it is getting late. Let me make, let me make, alright you do the harsh sound. What can be done? Krishna is testing, giving scope for all for service and that female monkey made a loud screaming sound or harsh sound. But Krishna opens His eyes. Krishna is satisfied because she is a devotee. Devotee’s voice is always good.

    Our Param Gurudev Bhakti Siddhantha Saraswati Gosvami Thakur asked a devotee whose voice is not very sweet, but is very devotionally inclined, I want to hear from you. By devotion, Krishna and Krishna’s personal associates are satisfied, not by only outward sweet voice. RadhaKrishna mutually see each other with wistful eyes and fear we may be detected now, it is getting late. They forget they are Supreme Lord. Krishna is Supreme Lord and Radharani is Absolute counter-part of Krishna, and when they perform pastimes, they forget themselves. This is done by Yogamaya. And they are running towards their own respective houses and go to their beds to sleep.
