Day 6 : Fourth Yaam

Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj

10:34am to 3:22pm. O Supreme Lord! I have got no desire for wealth, manpower or erudition (desire for deceitful Trivarga— worldly piety, money and lust or even to merge myself with the Impersonal Formless Brahma, i.e. ‘Mukti’— salvation, which is more deceitful). My only prayer is to get causeless one-pointed devotion to You.

  • Indication of Midday Pastimes of Radha-Krsna:

A hint has been given here about the holy, divine transcendental pastimes of Sri Sri Radha-Krsna at mid-day:

    madhyāhne ‘nyonya saṁgodita vividha-vikārādi-bhūṣāpramugdhau
    vāmyotkaṇṭhātilolau smaramakha lalitā dyāli-narmāptaśātau
    dolāraṇyāmbu-vaṁśī-hṛti-rati-madhupānārka-pūjādi-līlau
    rādhā-kṛṣṇau satṛṣṇau parijana-ghaṭayā sevyamānau smarāmi
    (Sri Govinda-lilamrta)

The transcendental ecstatic feelings that manifest in Radha-kunda during the meeting of Radha-Krsna at mid-day is the highest which do not manifest at any other period of pastimes. Gopis try for the union of Radha-Krsna, to bring them to meet each other because by their union so much ecstatic feelings will be revealed, they will be more benefited, highest benefit they will get. So their efforts are to bring Radha and Krsna so that they can get that rasa, transcendental bliss to the highest degree. But for that there should be firm belief in Krsna and His Absolute Counter-part Radha. If there is any deviation to that everything will be lost. If we have any doubts regarding Radha-Krsna tattva, then everything is lost. We will not be benefited by listening to all this.

Krishna has a form (svarupa). By saying svarupa it may mean limiting. So, some impersonalists who think that the Impersonal formless God (Brahman) is the cause of all that manifests, and with this background hears about the narrations of Krshna’s pastimes nothing will be the outcome of such hearing, it will be useless. And they will not sit here. They will sit for some time and then speak against you to others. They know nothing about spiritualism, they will say like that because they have got no belief. I had been to East India, within the corner of India, by name Silchur and there some dignitaries are present. One of the dignitaries, as chief guest he spoke for one hour and after that another judge spoke. Judges are very careful, they speak less, they know we have come to certain place, here we should not speak much. But he spoke at length for about one hour and what is the purport of his saying? The Ultimate Reality is formless, there is no potency, nothing. If there is form then it will come within some limitation, nirvisesh, nirakar, nisshakti without any potency. But we conditioned souls cannot think about that. For that reason, for the benefit of a sadhaka the form of Brahman has been imagined and that impersonal Brahman is the ultimate reality, formless, without any potency, without any quality, and that is the ultimate reality. But we are not capable of thinking of that. For that reason, for the beginners, neophytes they will start with some form, whatever it may be. It can be Krsna, or it can be any demi-god, it may be a human being, it may be his wife, it may be his child, or anything. We have to concentrate on the object of worship. Ultimately the object of worship, concentration and the person who is concentrating, the three constituents will melt in the formless Brahman. What is the benefit of hearing all this? What benefit they will get? Because of some prominence in desire, the committee members asked me ‘Swamiji, you please give vote of thanks’. And I got the chance to speak. I gave thanks to the speaker Judge also saying he spoke very well, but I have a small question for him. He said our ultimate goal is Impersonal Brahman, and if there be form then he is Shiva and he cannot become the cause. But because ordinary conditioned souls cannot think of it so Lord, by accepting Sattva guna becomes Ishwar, and then meditating on Him in the end the form is destroyed and all the three merge into Brahman. I said, if this is true, then Lord accepting sattva guna becomes Ishwar. If He has got no potency, without any form, energy, if He is impotent, how He can become Ishwar by accepting sattva guna? He can do nothing. You are saying Supreme Lord is nothing. What is this? When He has got no potency, how can He be Ishwar by accepting Sattva guna. It is irrational talk. Even one finitesimal soul we call him a person and he has the capacity of thinking, feeling and willing (iccha, kriya and anubhuti) in him. When that consciousness leaves the body, he is dead body and by touching him one has to take bath. Nobody considers a body a person. As long as he has this thinking, feeling and willing quality in him he is considered a person. When this thinking, feeling and willing is gone, he is not considered a person. A personality is a conscious principle and not an unconscious principle. An unconscious principle is not called a person. As much the knowledge principle illuminates that much the personality illuminates. Here there is no knowledge, no consciousness, then he cannot be considered a person. When we accept anu-cetan a person, then what is the loss in accepting a vibhu-cetan a person. Is it irrational? If I a spark of the conscious principle, I have got thinking, feeling and willing and Supreme Lord has got Absolute Will-power, Absolute Thinking power, and has Absolute Knowledge, iccha-kriya-anubhuti, if He has He is Absolute Person, Person Infinite.

This is shown in the pastimes of Krsna when Yashoda Mayya tries to bind Krsna. All cowherd men and women (gopa-gopis) complain that your child is very naughty, mischievous and coming along with His friends steals yogurt, butter, etc and she herself also witnesses it. She thought His future is not good, Supreme Lord’s future is not good, I have to correct Him right away. First she tried to cane Him but when seeing the cane in her hand He started to cry a lot fearing beatings, One who is feared by all, even the devi-devatas. Then Yashoda thought He is an innocent child, what benefit will be derived from beating Him, and thinking thus threw the cane in her hand and decided that she will tie Him with a rope instead. So, she got the rope, and His belly is so small, so tries to bind Him with the rope she is surprised to find the rope is two fingers short. So, got extra rope and joined it and tried to bind Him and again found it is two fingers short. What happened? She asked for more ropes to be brought and all ropes from Nanda Maharaj’s house were brought and joined which became 2 mile long, but still little Gopal’s belly could not be covered, always remained two fingers short. Observing this from far, the gopis were laughing seeing the mother cannot even bind her little child. In her attempt to bind Krsna and running behind Him, mother was perspiring and the flowers on her hair were scattered here and there and she became exhausted completely. Vishwanath Cakravarti Thakur says, Lord is infinite within His apparent finite form. His inconceivable power no jnanis or yogis can think about. Within His finite looking form, He is Infinite by His inconceivable power. When He sees mother’s plight He thought no one can bind Me. Being subdued by mother’s affection He accepts to be bound by her. Then, by the very first rope He could be bound by mother. Every time it was only two fingers short, not three or four or one. Where did the two fingers short go, He was bound when Krsna willed. So one finger is Lord’s grace and the other finger is our efforts to attract Lord’s grace i.e.seva-cesta. His form seems finite. But in Gokul Mahavana that small Gopal shows universe (Brahmanda) in His stomach to mother Yashoda. All the cowherd boys complain that Krsna is eating mud, but Yashoda says I will not believe what you all say, if Balaram (Dauji) His elder brother says then I will. Then Balaram, who is elder brother says; Yes, Yes, Kannaiah ate mud. Eating mud child will develop worms in the stomach, Thinking thus mother came and saw Krsna with His mouth full of mud and saying threw it away, she raised her hand to beat Him. She tried to beat the Lord! Then Krsna opened His mouth and she saw Brahmanada. In such a small belly how can Brahmanda manifest? Seeing this she was baffled thinking where from it appeared. Thinking if opulence mood comes then the sweet affectionate mood may be hindered, so Lord covered His opulent mood and concluded His pastime. By this pastime He showed that I am not an ordinary child. Those who lack intelligence and are foolish having no knowledge of Lord’s divine form and unlimited power, how can they benefit by hearing such sweet pastimes of the Lord?
