Day 4 : Fourth Yaam

Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj

10:34am to 3:22pm. O Supreme Lord! I have got no desire for wealth, manpower or erudition (desire for deceitful Trivarga— worldly piety, money and lust or even to merge myself with the Impersonal Formless Brahma, i.e. ‘Mukti’— salvation, which is more deceitful). My only prayer is to get causeless one-pointed devotion to You.

  • Madhyahna kaliya bhajan - Mid-day worship - Bhajan with taste (Ruchi bhajan)

In the third period we come up to nishta, fixation of mind to the Object of Worship. After this, in the fourth period we come up to ruchi when there will be no interruption of bhajan, continuous bhajan is there, then we shall feel the liking to do bhajan, i.e. bhajan with taste.

nāma sādhakera ahaituki kṛṣṇa bhakti binā anya kāmanā nahi.

One whose goal is one and only Harinama, the goal (sadhya) and process to attain the goal (sadhan) are one, they have no other desire except one-pointed causeless devotion to Supreme Lord. If other desires are there, there cannot be hari bhajan.

If you have any desire except service of Krishna then it is not actual practice of Harinama but something else. Means is justified by the end. If the goal, end purpose is bad, then everything will turn bad. If with some worldly desire you call the Lord, He will not come. He is not for us, He is for Himself, and all things are meant for Him. So, in this mood (having worldly desires) Nama sadhan is not possible. So it is said, except one-pointed devotion to Lord, the Nama sadhak has no other desires. Exclusive devotion to Sri Krishna, and there should not be any other desire.

    Sri Siksastakam 4th Verse:

na dhanaṁ na janaṁ na sundarīṁ
    kavitāṁ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye
    mama janmani janmanīśvare
    bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukḥ tvayi

O Supreme Lord! I have no desire for wealth, manpower or erudition, desire for Trivarga - worldly piety, money and lust (dharma artha kama) and the fourth varga is 'mukti' liberation the goal of seekers of Knowledge. My only prayer is to get causeless one-pointed devotion to You birth after birth.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is giving teaching to living entities who are aspiring for their eternal welfare, do not desire for anything other than the most auspicious Sri Hari. According to one’s desire he will attain the object, so purify your desires.

This has been explained here in great detail what objects we desire in this world for our sense enjoyment are all causes of bondage for those bound in the gross and subtle bodies. 'kṛṣṇera saṁsāra kara chāḍi anāchāra jive dayā kṛṣṇa nāma sarva dharma sāra'. If everything is in relation to Sri Krishna, then they become favorable in the service of Sri Krishna.

‘griha dravya sisya pasu dhanya adi dhana’ All material things for the sense gratification of this gross body like desire for a good house, property, wealth, desire for making disciples, making disciples is also a sort of devotion, but if disciples are made for selfish motives, for one's sense gratification then it becomes material desire. Desire for paddy, crops, which comes under wealth becomes material desire when it is desired for our sense-gratification.

‘stri putra dasa dasi kutumbadi jana’ We say from mouth that I am the servant of the Lord, and so also my wife, children, servants, maid servants and other relatives, but we do not have that faith within our hearts. When we see them in relation to our body then it is binding, and they all become objects of our sense gratification(visaya). Material knowledge if leads one to the service of the Lord, then it is good. 'jada vidya jata mayara vaibhav, tomara bhajanera badha, moha janamiya anitya samsare, jivake koraye gadha' (All the so-called knowledge of this world is born of the flickering potency of Your illusory energy, maya. It is an impediment to the execution of devotional service to You. Indulgence in mundane knowledge verily makes an ass of the eternal soul by encouraging his infatuation with this temporary world.) If material knowledge be the end of your life, then that is a kind of bondage. It is all earthly attainment. Such desires should be removed.

‘ye sabi payibar asa nahi kari..’ From the core of the heart we have to say. According to our desire we have got the birth. We wanted to enjoy this world. So Supreme Lord has created His own infinite brahmandas and so many species to fulfill the desire of His own beings. They do not want Me, they want to enjoy. They cannot enjoy Me. Let Me fulfill their desire. By committing offense at His Lotus Feet, we desire something else except His service, for that reason He has given us, now you correct your desire. Now you have got this human birth, discriminating power, wisdom to discriminate between eternal and non-eternal, giving up non-eternal can accept eternal, you think and speak from the heart, then I will give.

Indication of Midday Pastimes of Sri Radha-Krishna

    madhyāhne ‘nyonya saṁgodita vividha-vikārādi-bhūṣāpramugdhau
    vāmyotkaṇṭhātilolau smaramakha lalitā dyāli-narmāptaśātau
    dolāraṇyāmbu-vaṁśī-hṛti-rati-madhupānārka-pūjādi-līlau
    rādhā-kṛṣṇau satṛṣṇau parijana-ghaṭayā sevyamānau smarāmi
    (Sri Govinda-lilamrta)

At mid-day Sri Sri Radha Krishna in each other’s company manifest all transcendental ecstatic feelings including Astasattvik-vikar – eight principal ecstatic feelings, thirty three kinds of other subordinate ecstatic feelings – in a very beautiful way. Some of the extraordinary feelings are ‘Vamya’ – exhibiting by external behavior that there is no love for Krishna but inside actually there is love, i.e. inside actually just the reverse, and ‘Utkanta’ - extreme eagerness and restlessness to meet with the object of love. By hearing jokes of Sri Lalita and other sakhis, Radha-Krishna get happiness. In addition to these, there are innumerable pastimes namely swinging festival (dola) Jhulan, which happens in Kamya Vana. It is celebrated from Ekadasi to Purnima for 5 days. Jhulan, swinging ceremony occurs everyday during Mid-day pastimes at Radha-kunda. Various other pastimes described here are pleasant strolling in the forest (Vana-vihar), water sports in ponds and rivers (jala-keli), stealing of flute (Vamsi-haran), other transcendental amorous pastimes (rati-kriya), drinking of sweet honey (madhu-pana), worship of Sun-god (Surya-puja) etc. Radha-Krishna while engrossed in these transcendental pastimes are served by gopis (parijana).

armibhyaḥ parito hareḥ priyatayā vyaktiṁ yayur jñāninas
    tebhyo jñāna-vimukta-bhakti-paramāḥ premaika-niṣṭhās tataḥ
tebhyas tāḥ paśu-pāla-paṅkaja-dṛśas tābhyo ’pi sā rādhikā
preṣṭhā tadvad iyaṁ tadīya-sarasī tāṁ nāśrayet kaḥ kṛtī
(Sri Rupa Goswami Pad virachit Upadeshamrit verse 10)

In Sri Upadeshamrit, Srila Rupa Gosvami has written that to perform what is prohibited by the Vedas is sin, it does not come under worldly piety (dharma). In this material world to fulfill our selfish sense gratification we perform various evil activities and we want to establish ourselves as very prestigious persons in the society. Scriptures say these are all sins, great sins, condemnable sins. So if we follow varnashram dharma (based on caste and social status) in the mode of goodness, then it is good if performed for Lord’s pleasure, but not very good. Jnani (the worshipper of formless Brahman) is superior to Karmi (one who performs actions enjoined by the scriptures for mundane benefit) because they exert more efforts to please the Lord. Karmi desires for non-eternal things of this world, and he will worship till his selfish desires are fulfilled. So, one who studies and contemplates and discusses the topics of scriptures is more dear. The Jnanis do not desire these non-eternal things of the world, they seek liberation and so are more dear to the Lord. But in them also there is some sort of desire for liberation. More superior to them are those who do not even seek liberation and are devotees in shanta rasa like Catuhshan (Four kumars). Even before the darshan of the Lord Narayana in person, just getting the scent of the Tulasi and flowers offered at the Lotus feet of the Lord they become attracted to the Lord. Though they are established in liberation ‘mukti’ they gave it up and started worship of the Lord. Even they have got no eligibility to enter into these pastimes.

    yayur jñāninas tebhyo
    jñāna-vimukta-bhakti-paramāḥ
    premaika-niṣṭhās tataḥ

Where there is relation in servitude - dasya sambandha, prabhu brhtya sambandha, they have love for the Lord, and are engaged in service, like Narada Goswami and others. Further, there is difference in the dasya in Krishna’s pastimes and in Vaikunta pastimes. In Vraja, in dasya also there is sweetness (Madhurya). Even a dasa has great desire to attain love for God, has great attachment for the Lord. When Krishna exhibits restlessness during oil massage, a dasa gives Him a slap which Narayana’s devotee cannot do, nor Ramachandra’s devotee Hanuman can do, like done by Ratraka, Patraka. Even in dasya there is so much sweetness, then what to say about other mellows? Not only dasya, sakhya, even vatsalya devotees those who consider Krishna less than them, control Him, discipline Him, and even bless Him, such other things, even they have no eligibility into these (Radha-kunda) pastimes. Above them are devotees in the mood of consort-hood (Kanta-rasa devotees), Among Kanta-rasa devotees topmost, supreme is Radharani. And non-different from Radharani is Radha-kunda.

We also went to Radha-kunda. I also took dip in Radha-kunda, and by doing so, I am not residing in Radha-kunda, I am residing in hell. I did not even had darshan of Radha-kunda. We heard about our Param Gurudev (Srila Bhakti Siddhantha Saraswati Gosvami Thakur) that he did not take dips in Radha-kunda any time. So did he not reside at Radha-kunda? We cannot imitate this. He saw Radha-kunda as manifestation of Radharani Herself. So how he will let his feet in? And every time we go we hurry to put our feet in Radha-kunda, Shyama-kunda and take dips there. He offered obeisances to Her from far. Here Pundarika Vidyanidhi, who thinks he has no eligibility to call himself associate of Mahaprabhu, would not even go for darshan of the Ganga River and would feel pained to see how people behaved offensively towards the Ganga. He goes to take her darshan at night and from a distance offer her obeisances. Ganga is Vishnupad and if one has to take dip he has to put his feet in the waters. But our intelligence cannot reach that level. I do not say you imitate, but this sort of mood, this sort of darshan of the supreme transcendental abode automatically manifests there and we conduct appropriately. We are not to imitate to show others, automatically it will be manifested in their heart. It is supreme where only gopis have the eligibility. When, in which birth we will attain that eligibility, no body can say. But Mahaprabhu through His Grace-incarnate form has already given that eligibility through tridanda sannyas. But we have not yet attained the eligibility to accept it. If one takes shelter of Mahaprabhu and His nitya-siddha associates then one can reach Vrajendra Nanandan. The meaning of Sannyas mantras is that as much attachment to the Supreme Lord manifests that much material attachments will be destroyed, and in supreme highest transcendental realm all kinds of pastimes are there, you can do with Krishna and get the highest bliss, that has been offered by the extended graceful form of Gauranga Mahaprabhu, Gurudev has given. But I am unfortunate, I cannot understand this.
