    Hari Vasare Hari Kirtan Vidhan

On Ekādaśī day, the instructions are to stay near the Supreme Lord always. But the difficulty is this. The Supreme Lord is in the transcendental realm and we are on the mundane plane, with this physical body. How, then, are we to remain near the Supreme Lord? This article gives the answer to this question.

    Śrī Vṛndāvana Dāsa Ṭhākura

Śrī Kṛṣṇadāsa Kaviraja Gosvāmī says, “If even an atheist or a Muslim whould listen to Caitanya Maṅgala, composed by Śrī Vṛndāvana Dāsa Ṭhākura, he immediately becomes a great Vaiṣṇava. An ordinary human being could not have composed such a sublime work; Lord Caitanya Himself has spoken through the mouth of Vṛndāvana Dāsa. I offer millions of obeisances unto the lotus feet of Vṛndāvana Dāsa Ṭhākura who has delivered the entire universe through his book.”

The Boundless Mercy of Vrindavan Das Thakur

Vrindavan Das Thakur exemplified boundless mercy towards the fallen souls. As a devoted servant of Nityananda Prabhu, an incarnation of Vyasa and a revered teacher of the Vaishnava tradition, Vrindavan Das Thakur's mere touch had transformative power. It was believed that if even a speck of dust from his foot would fall upon a sinner's head, that individual would be blessed, with all sinful inclinations inevitably eradicated. The compassion exhibited by Visnu and the Vaishnavas transcends the understanding of those who fail to recognize their true welfare. Anyone who follows in the footsteps of Vrindavana Das Thakur and both practices and preaches pure devotion to Gaurakrishna will always be engaged in an effort to bring about everyone’s ultimate well-being. While he outwardly appeared stern towards the adversaries of the Lord, his heart overflowed with boundless compassion towards them.

    Glories of Apara Ekadashi (Hindi)

Observing Ekadashi is one important limb of the 64 limbs of devotion. There is a scriptural prescript to do Upavasa on Ekadashi Tithi. Upavasa means to stay near Supreme Lord. For a conditioned soul it is possible by performing Hari Kirtana alone, which is the Yuga dharma for Kali-yuga and is the only way.

    Bhakta Prahlad

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu even after hearing the biographies of Prahlad Maharaj and Dhruva Maharaj a hundred times from Gadadhar Pandit asks him to read them again and again. Through such an inconceivable pastime, the Lord is emphasizing the importance of reading the biographies of pure devotees. Conditioned souls may commit mistakes in understanding the pastimes of the Lord and it will be supremely detrimental to their spiritual progress if they try to imitate those divine pastimes. Therefore, the most compassionate form of the Lord, Sri Gaurasundar teaches us by example to go through the biographies of pure devotees. The current magazine features the holy biography of Srila Prahlad Maharaj, the embodiment of the most ideal character and pure devotion.

      My Connection is All-in-All

Srila Jiva Goswami has traced out how Prahlad Maharaj began his life of devotion. I pray we may not commit any offense to Prahlad Maharaj in recounting this. In his previous life, before he became a devotee, Prahlad was born into a low family, and there was a Temple of Nrsimha Deva by the side of his house. The Temple was in a broken condition. Sometimes someone used to come at noon and offer something, but otherwise the Temple was almost deserted.

      His All Powerful Narasimha Kirtan

Srila Turyashrami Maharaj remembers, “ One special thing I have seen in Maharaj. When he does kirtan, he forgets everything about his surroundings and becomes indifferent to this world. One time, there was Nagarkirtan held in Kolkata. Maharaj was leading the kirtan and he lifted his hands and immediately got immersed in the kirtan. His body turned to red. He forgot whether the devotees were catching up with his speed of walking or not. He is not putting his hands down for a moment! He is incessantly dancing in transcendental ecstasy! And along with him, I and one more Prabhu came far ahead of the devotees. One was playing mridanga and the other was with kartal. It so happened, that only three of us were seen doing kirtan on the road near Rasbehari in Kolkata! Then I stopped playing kartal. Maharaj’s trance broke and he asked why have you stopped? I replied we have come very far ahead of our group and we will have to wait for them. Such an immersion he has for any activity he used to get involved in! He used to always be in such ecstatic mood.”

      Jay Dau Jay Dau

In one harikatha on the advent of Lord Baladeva, Srila Gurudev emphasized the importance of performing the ‘Jaya Dau Jaya Dau’ kirtan. He instructed that his Gurudev, HDG Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhav Goswami Maharaja used to pray for the grace of Guru, Vaiṣṇavas, and Bhagavan through this kirtan, and that we should do it without fail on every special tithi. By doing so, Guru, Vaiṣṇavas, and Bhagvan will be pleased.

A votary, to satisfy Chaitanya Mahāprabhu and the Supreme Lord Śrī Krishna, should at least practice the first and third verses of Śikṣāṣṭaka sincerely from the core of the heart. Chaitanya Mahāprabhu has taught in the first verse, mainly seven principal attainments or more correctly all attainments while doing Śrī Rādhā-Krishna sankīrtan.

His kīrtana is Only for Bhagavan’s Pleasure

Krishna is telling Narada Goswami ‘mad-bhaktā yatra gāyanti tatra tiṣṭhāmi nārada’ (Padma Puran). 'Wherever My devotees assemble and sing the glories of My Name, Form, Attributes, Pastimes and Personal Associates is the place that I stay.' Also, Srila Gurudev would refer to Sri Vyasa Deva’s pastime of attaining eternal bliss after he wrote Srimad Bhagavatam exclusively for the pleasure of the Lord on the advice of his Guru Narada Goswami. Here Srila Bhakti Kushala Padmanabha Maharaj is affectionately remembering the same teaching of Gurudev through his kirtans and harikatha. that all the limbs of devotion should be performed with the sole purpose of propitiating the Supreme Lord and nothing else.
