    Staying Near the Lord

What is the real purpose of Ekadashi? Our smriti-grantha, or Vaishnava smriti book, is called Hari-Bhakti-Vilasa. In this, there are laws or rules stipulating how to properly perform all the vows that have devotion to the Supreme Lord as their goal. Those who are pure devotees like to act in accordance with the injunctions of the devotional literature, especially Hari-Bhakti-Vilasa.

Observe Ekadashi-vrata to Please the Supreme Lord Only

Srila Gurudev narrates the benefits of observing Ekadashi and adds that observing Ekadashi-vrata in Dhama or in the association of devotees gives the highest benefit. He reasons that in scriptures materialistic benefits are mentioned for observing Ekadashi-vrata, is only to attract general class of people who are attached to worldly things to somehow or the other observe Ekadashi-vrata and attain real eternal benefit which is to get the loving service of Supreme Lord Sri Krishna. Later, Srila Gurudev sings the Kirtan, ‘ātmā nivedana tuwā pade kari’, of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur and explains its meaning.

      Śrī Svarūpa Dāmodara

Swarupa Dāmodara was Mahāprabhu’s constant companion, enhancing the Lord’s pleasure by singing the songs requested by the Lord. Svarūpa Dāmodara could understand the deep feelings of Mahāprabhu’s heart and it was by his grace alone that all the Lord’s devotees could know this. Swarupa Dāmodara was thus the authority through whom the most confidential pastimes of Mahāprabhu came into devotee society.

Harikatha on the Day of Gundicha Marjan

In this harikatha, Srila Gurudev narrates about Gundicha-marjan-lila. He starts with explaining the meaning of Gundicha and how Gundicha-marjan was started by Mahaprabhu. He explains Mahaprabhu’s mood while having the darshan of Jagannath Dev and also narrates the pastime of Lord Krishna’s meeting the Vraja-vasi at Kurukshetra. The Vraja-vasi wants Krishna to go to Vrindavan along with them and they request this of Him. Sriman Mahaprabhu, in the mood of Radharani, pulls Jagannath’s chariot taking Him from Kurukshetra to Vrindavan.

      The Glorious Gaudiya Lineage

Srila Paramgurudev Om Vishnupad 108 Sri Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhav Goswami Maharaj wrote in one of his articles, “One day, by the mercy of Srila Prabhupād, the world will profusely sing glories and worship Sri Sāraswata Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas (that is, Srila Prabhupād’s followers). They alone are able to establish the highest ideal of benevolence in the world. Victory will certainly belong to the devotees of the Sri Chaitanya Gauḍīya Maṭh or those who have taken shelter of the lotus feet of Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas.”

        Harikatha in Vishwa Vaishnava Rajsabha

Gurumaharaj narrating the importance of human birth, emphasises on urgency of starting haribhajan, immediately. He says, “You have got this human birth. God has given you this scope to worship and you are misusing this time, spoiling the whole time for nothing? Always engaged in non-eternal and unholy things, why? Is there any guarantee that you shall get human birth again after you die? So immediately, you should start haribhajan.” He then advises to take shelter of a pure devotee who comes in bonafide preceptorial succession and emphasises on the importance of taking mantra from such succession.

People Without Diksha Will Be Born as Animals?

In the devotional and other Vedic scriptures we sometimes find statements that seem very fundamentalist and hard. For instance in Hari Bhakti Vilas, it is mentioned that people who have not taken diksha will be born as animals in their next life. How are we supposed to interpret this kind of statement as I cannot take it literally?

Take Absolute Shelter to the Preceptorial Channel

Nobody on earth has got this power through an inductive process, the process of ascension we shall know the right path by our capacity by reading books, by going through, by our intelligence, etc. Only you are missing your time. You have to speak what you have heard from a bonafide devotee, try to recapitulate, recite that, and repeat that. That will purify your mind. You are speaking for your own purification and that knowledge is coming from the preceptorial channel. It is descending through the right preceptorial channel.

Why is There a Disciplic Succession?

In this world, many people are contaminated by the impersonalist doctrine and thus fall into a life of sin. If there were no disciplic succession, or institution of devotees free of this contamination, then it would be very difficult for ordinary people to find saintly association. This is why the Padma Purana tells us, 'Any mantra that does not come in disciplic succession is considered to be fruitless. Therefore, four divine individuals will appear in the age of Kali to establish disciplic schools.'

Authority to Make a Statement on the Disciplic Succession

On the first two nights, Baladeva विद्याभूषण received only minimal directions from the Lord and was not satisfied with what he had heard. On the third night, however, the Supreme Lord gave him his full mercy and reassured him that he would be able to achieve his goal. In a very short time, Baladeva completed writing his commentaries on the Upanisads, Vedanta-sutra, Bhagavad-gita, and the Bhagavatam.

A votary, to satisfy Chaitanya Mahāprabhu and the Supreme Lord Śrī Krishna, should at least practice the first and third verses of Śikṣāṣṭaka sincerely from the core of the heart. Chaitanya Mahāprabhu has taught in the first verse, mainly seven principal attainments or more correctly all attainments while doing Śrī Rādhā-Krishna sankīrtan.

His kīrtana is Only for Bhagavan’s Pleasure

Krishna is telling Narada Goswami ‘mad-bhaktā yatra gāyanti tatra tiṣṭhāmi nārada’ (Padma Puran). 'Wherever My devotees assemble and sing the glories of My Name, Form, Attributes, Pastimes and Personal Associates is the place that I stay.' Also, Srila Gurudev would refer to Sri Vyasa Deva’s pastime of attaining eternal bliss after he wrote Srimad Bhagavatam exclusively for the pleasure of the Lord on the advice of his Guru Narada Goswami. Here Srila Bhakti Kushala Padmanabha Maharaj is affectionately remembering the same teaching of Gurudev through his kirtans and harikatha. that all the limbs of devotion should be performed with the sole purpose of propitiating the Supreme Lord and nothing else.
