Śrī Abhirāma Ṭhākura (Śrī Rāma Dāsa)

Śrī Abhirāma Ṭhākura was a very vigorous and powerful acārya. He engaged in preaching on the orders of Lord Nityānanda Prabhu and saved many atheists and people opposed to the vaiṣṇava religion. He possessed tremendous spiritual power. The atheists trembled whenever they saw him. He was intoxicated as though he had been possessed by Nityānanda Prabhu, and his enchanting mercies are famed throughout the world.

Curing the Fever of Material Existence

Here, with different evidences from scriptures Srila Sant Maharaj explains that only by surrendering unto the Supreme Lord one can remain aloof from maya. The living entity becomes so influenced by the modes of material nature that he considers sense gratification to be the most desirable goal, even though it brings him only distress. Our state of bondage has existed since time without beginning, and is quite impossible for human intelligence to undo. It can be unraveled only by associating with sadhus, realized souls. Even a moment’s association with a sadhu can award all perfection.

Remembering Srila Bhakti Kumuda Santa Gosvami Maharaj

I got the opportunity to listen to his kirtans at Sree Gauranga Math, Kesiadi. He sang the kirtan 'Gopīnāth, mama nivedana śuno'. He knew all the kirtans by heart and his performance of nritya(dance)-kirtan would leave the audience spellbound. I have not seen anybody perform kirtan like him ever, for hours together. His voice was mesmerizing. Also, he was a very powerful speaker.

      Śrī Śyāmānanda Prabhu

An extraordinary incident which took place in Vrindavan demonstrates how dear Śyāmānanda Prabhu was to Rādhārāṇī. One day Śyāmānanda Prabhu was sweeping the Rāsa-maṇḍala in Vṛndāvan absorbed in an ecstatic trance. Suddenly by Rādhārāṇī’s transcendental mercy he found Her ankle bracelet (nūpura) lying on the ground.

      Śrī Vaṁśīvadanānanda Ṭhākura

The gopis praised the good fortune of Kṛṣṇa’s flute, for He was able to constantly drink the nectar of Kṛṣṇa’s lips. Everything in Vraja is spiritual, i.e., conscious and so the flute could take human form as Śrī Vaṁśīvadanānanda Ṭhākura.

This kīrtana holds a special place in the heart of Śrīla Gurumahārāja. He would often recite it on various occasions, such as once on the banks of Śrī Rādhā-kuṇḍa at the Maṭha in Iśodyāna Mayapur on the appearance day of Śrī Rādhā Kuṇḍa, and at other times in his bhajana kutīra. Tears would roll down from the eyes of Śrīla Gurudev as he listened to the kīrtanas sung by devotees. He chose to enter into the eternal service of Śrī Śrī Rādhākṛṣṇa while this particular kīrtana was being sung by the devotees for his pleasure.

        The True Spirit of Separation

The orders of the Spiritual Master are to be obeyed diligently without reserve or delay. If we wish to show our love and faith for our Spiritual Master, it will be by following His teachings. If we take these instructions seriously and do everything we can to realize them, then we will one day become capable of giving the Spiritual Master the gift that he desires above all others. The Spiritual Master will be pleased and transmit unlimited power to the disciple with whom he is pleased. To the extent that we serve the Spiritual Master with sincerity and repeat his teachings, through the association with his words, our hearts will cry out with the desire for the good fortune to be associated with him by directly seeing, touching and serving him. Only then will we be able to understand the true spirit of separation.

        Kirtan

        ki jāni ki bale

This kīrtana is from the section - goptṛtve varaṇa song 1 of 'Śaraṇāgati' Bhakti Gītī of Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura. 'Śaraṇāgati' means 'Process of Surrender'. The overall mood of Śaraṇāgati is humility. After dainya (humbleness) and ātmanivedana(self-surrender), 'goptṛtve varaṇa' is the third limb of 'Śaraṇāgati' and it means fully accepting Kṛṣṇa as our Supreme Lord and Master, and our Maintainer. This kīrtana is sung by Śrī Phuleswar Brahmacārī praying for the blessings of Śrīla Gurudev before Śrīla Gurudev's departure.

        ātma-nivedana tuwā pade kori

In this kīrtana, Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura expresses supreme joy and bliss surrendering unto the Lotus Feet of the Lord, which offer aśoka, abhaya, and amṛta—freedom from all sorrows and fears, bestowing pure bliss. In the culmination of his expression, he declares, ‘āmi to tomāra, tumi to āmāra, ki kāja apara dhane,’ meaning ‘I am most certainly Yours, and You are indeed mine. So what need is there of any other treasure?’ This kīrtana, sung by Śrī Dinabandhu Brahmacārī, serves as a heartfelt prayer for the blessings of Śrīla Gurudev prior to his departure.

We are to accept that which is congenial and give up that which is not congenial for worship of Krishna; we should have firm faith that He is the only sustainer and protector; we are to dedicate ourself totally to the Lotus Feet of Krishna; and be humble by giving up all false material egos.

Just by Remembering Him, One Becomes Free From Millions of Births

Mahārāja also explained that only when a pure devotee is giving prasādam, whether or not it was formally offered to Kṛṣṇa with mantras and everything. If you do that you offer the formal mantras and go near the altar and all that, you still don’t know if Kṛṣṇa has eaten it. But when a pure devotee hands prasādam, you know Kṛṣṇa has eaten it even if it wasn’t offered to him, it was just handed to the pure devotee.
