  • Pujyapad Tridandi Swami Sri Srimad Bhakti Kamal Madhusudan Maharaj performed his manifest pastimes in a Brahmanical family in Bajitpur village, Faridpur district, East Bengal. His revered father's name was Sriyukta Upendra Nath Sanyal and mother’s name was Sriyukta Parvati Devi. Srila Maharaj’s name during his household life was Sri Nrupendranath Sanyal. His family was given the title 'Majumdar' during the Nawabi regime. Affluent landlords were respectfully given such titles in those days. Maharaj had acquired a higher level of education and had a strong command over the English language. After completing his education, he moved to Kolkata and spent some time working with Amrit Bazar Patrika in their editorial department.

It was during this time that he got the opportunity to visit Gaudiya Math located at Bagh Bazaar and to embrace the fortune of having darshan and listening Krishna-katha from the lotus mouth of most revered Gurudev Srila Bhakti Siddhant Saraswati Goswami Thakur Prabhupad. In a very short while, he received Harinam and Diksha-mantra from Srila Prabhupad and was given the name Narottam Das Brahmachari. Immediately after that, he renounced his worldly life and started staying in the Math. He was a lifelong celibate.

Most revered Srila Prabhupad noted Sri Narottam Prabhu’s sincere inclination toward serving Sri Hari, Guru and Vaishnavas, especially his particular attachment for hearing and speaking Krishna-katha. For this reason, Srila Prabhupad sent him, along with many veteran tridandi-sannyasis, to preach all over India, the doctrines of pure devotion as issued from the lotus mouth of Sriman Mahaprabhu. Srila Prabhupad, on hearing from others as well as personally witnessing Sri Narottam Prabhu speaking Harikatha in the assemblies of distinguished intellectuals; observing his indomitable enthusiasm and expertise in fulfilling numerous responsibilities, like establishing Maths and temples, and seeing his eagerness to render all types of services with a peaceful mind and a sweet smile on his face, conferred upon him profuse affectionate blessings by awarding, on behalf of Sree Navadvipa-dhama Pracharini sabha, the devotionally significant title, 'Bhakti Kamala', which means 'the lotus of devotion.'

On the last day of December in 1936, at dawn, when Srila Prabhupad decided to close his manifest pastimes, black clouds descended on the Gaudiya sky. During that time, due to grave separation grief from Srila Prabhupad, all his intimate disciples were performing devotional services while staying at various different places. Pujyapad Narottam Prabhu during that time was staying in Bardhaman City at Meethapukur Lane.

Being attracted by Srila Narottam Prabhu’s strong harikatha, a wealthy and religious person arranged to construct a beautiful temple there. Pujyapad Maharaj kept the name of the temple as Sree Krishna Chaitanya Math. Later a similar Math was established at Ishodhyaan Sridham Mayapur in which a very beautiful and high dome (chuda) temple and a beautiful gate (toran) was made that was decorated with exquisite carvings. This Math was also named as Sree Krishna Chaitanya Math. Later there was a beautiful Shiva temple established on the left side of the main temple. The services related to installation of all Maths and deities was spearheaded by Pujyapad Bhakti Pramod Puri Goswami Maharaj, senior God brother of Srila Maharaj.

Srila Maharaj also established another Math at a place named Raipur which is located at the South side of Kolkata. Although the Math in Mayapur was established later, considering the gravity of it being located at Sridham Mayapur, this Math was made as primary (mool) Math and the other two Maths were considered as its branches (shakha Math).

During the manifestation pastimes of Srila Prabhupad, while staying at Bagbazar Gaudiya Math, Srila Maharaj was deeply attracted to Pujyapad Tridandi Swami Srimad Bhakti Rakshak Sridhar Deva Goswami Maharaj due to his esteemed devotional practices and his ability to encapsulate the divine teachings of Srila Prabhupad. After the disappearance of Srila Prabhupad, Srila Maharaj accepted the highest renounced order of life (sanyas) from Srila Bhakti Rakshak Sridhar Deva Goswami Maharaj at Sri Saraswat Gaudiya Math, Kolerganj, Nabadwip and was given the name Tridandi Bikshu Srimad Bhakti Kamal Madhusudan Maharaj. Under the divine guidance of Srila Sridhar Maharaj, he preached the divine message of Srila Prabhupad at different places in India.

Pujyapad Srimad Bhakti Rakshak Sridhar Deva Goswami Maharaj, Pujyapad Srimad Bhakti Vichara Yayavara Goswami Maharaj, Pujyapad Nama-bhajananandi Srila Krishnadasa Babaji Maharaj, Pujyapad Srimad Bhakti Dayita Madhava Goswami Maharaj and other prominent, intimate disciples of Srila Prabhupad used to experience great delight upon hearing Puyapad Madhusudana Maharaj speak on Srimad-Bhagavatam.

At Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math in Kolkata, during festivals like Sri Krishna Janmashtami and the appearance anniversary of the Math deities, Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhava Goswami Maharaj used to invite Srila Madhusudan Maharaj. Srila Maharaj used to be the cause of pleasure and bliss for the present revered tridandi-sanyasis and all Vaishnavas by delivering elaborate, comprehensive discourse on the doctrines of pure devotion.

Srila Maharaj was bestowed with all the divine qualities of a Vaishnava. Krishna's devotee possesses all the divine qualities that are present in Sree Krishna Himself.

While Srila Maharaj was performing the pastime of illness, at his Math at Vardhaman, where his dear disciples were engaged in serving him in their best ability by providing him the best medical facilities available and expert doctors, just a few days before Sri Jagannath Rathyatra, he expressed his utmost desire to be taken to his Math at Sridham Mayapur which is non-different from Vrindavan.

In view of Maharaj's earnest desire, his sevaks brought him to Mayapur by motor vehicle. At Sri Krishna Chaitanya Math, located at the south side in Sridham Mayapur near Sri Saraswati and Ganga river, and in Radha-van, under the divine lotus feet of his beloved Lordships Sri Sri Guru Gauranga Sri Radha Govinda and Sri Radha Govind's beloved associate Sri Gopeshwar Mahadev, Maharaj was situated in a very blissful state until he closed his manifest pastimes.

On 7th July, 1991, just a couple of days prior to his Puri Dham yatra, Srimad Bhakti Pramod Puri Goswami Maharaj met Srila Maharaj, took his darshan and offered obeisances. At that time, while the words coming out of his mouth were not externally clear, he was looking blissful and contented from within. It seemed like he was totally engrossed in the thoughts of his life and soul, His Lordship.

3 Shravan (1398), 13 July (1991), Saturday on Shukla Dashmi Tithi at 3.30 PM, Srila Maharaj performed his disappearance pastime at Sri Krishna Chaitanya Math, Sridham Mayapur Ishodhyan. Amidst all the devotees performing Maha-sankirtan in separation grief, while remembering the lotus feet of Sri Sri Guru Gauranga Radha Govinda Deva and His beloved associate vaishnava-raj Sri Gopeshwara Sadashiva, Srila Maharaj entered into the midday past times of Sri Sri Radha Govinda Deva. Today, we are deprived of the earthly pastimes of a Vaishnava who is bestowed with all transcendental qualities. We are deeply missing his divine presence.

On 20th July, just a day before return (punar) Rathyatra, when Srila Puri Maharaj arrived at Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math, Kolkata, on that very day, he got the news about Srila Maharaj’s disappearance through a trunk call.

Though entering into the eternal service while being in the Sankirtan pastime place of Sri Gaursundara, the combined manifestation of Sri Radha Madhava Who appeared adorning the mood and complexion of Sri Radha, is blissful in the Absolute plane, the fact that we will deprived of his darshan is truly intolerable.

During the disappearance pastime of His beloved Srila Hari Das Thakur, Sriman Mahaprabhu, out of extreme separation grief with tear-filled eyes, spoke as follows:

    haridāsa āchila pṛthivīra 'śiromaṇi'
    tāhā vinā ratna-śūnyā ha-ila medinī
kṛpā kari' kṛṣṇa more diyāchilā saṅga
svatantra kṛṣṇera icchā, — kailā saṅga-bhaṅga
(Chaitanya Charitamrita Antya 11.97 and 11.94)

“Haridas Thakur was the crown jewel on the head of this earth; without him, this world is now bereft of its valuable jewel. Being merciful upon Me, Krishna gave Me his association. Being independent in His desires, He has now taken away his association.”

Sriman Mahaprabhu asked His beloved associate Ramananda Raya,

Prabhu kahe - “duḥkha-madhye kona duḥkha haya gurutara?”

He entered in the heart of Ramanand Raya and answered -

Raya Kahe - “kṛṣṇa-bhakta-viraha vinā duḥkha nāhi dekhi para."

Pujyapad Maharaj's Virah-utsav was held on 27th Shravan, 13th August in the Natya Mandir of Sri Krishna Chaitanya Math, Sridham Mayapur. The assembly commenced at 10 AM. Srimad Bhakti Pramod Puri Goswami Maharaj was the president (sabhapati) and Srimad Bhakti Kumud Sant Goswami Maharaj was the chief guest of the assembly.

Srimad Bhakti Jivan Aacharya Maharaj, Srimad Bhakti Toshan Giri Maharaj, Srimad Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Maharaj, Srimad Bhakti Suhrid Akinchan Maharaj and Srimad Bhakti Vaibhava Sagar Maharaj (Tarun Krishna Prabhu ) delivered Hari Katha in the assembly.

Other Tridandi Vaishnavas present in the assembly were: Srimad Bhakti Sharan Trivikram Maharaj, Srimad Bhakti Bandhava Janardan Maharaj, Srimad Bhakti Rakshak Narayan Maharaj from Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math, Srimad Bhakti Vedant Acharya Maharaj from Sri Devananda Gaudiya Math, Srimad Bhakti Vedant Janardan Maharaj, Srimad Bhakti Vedant Damodar Maharaj, Srimad Bhakti Vedant Govind Maharaj from Srila Shant Maharaj's Math, Srimad Bhakti Kiran Giri Maharaj from Sri Gaudiya Sangh, Srimad Bhakti Vedant Shubhag Maharaj from ISKCON and Srimad Hari Sharan Das Brahmchari from Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math.

At 1:00 PM post bhoga-aarti, all the Vaishnavas present in the assembly accepted various types of sumptuous Mahaprasad.

Srimad Bhakti Jivan Acharya Maharaj, disciple of Srila Madhusudan Maharaj, was elected as the new president acharya of Sree Krishna Chaitanya Math organization, with the blessings and consent of all Vaishanavas present in the assembly.
