Day 7 : Fourth Yaam
Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj
10:34am to 3:22pm. O Supreme Lord! I have got no desire for wealth, manpower or erudition (desire for deceitful Trivarga— worldly piety, money and lust or even to merge myself with the Impersonal Formless Brahma, i.e. ‘Mukti’— salvation, which is more deceitful). My only prayer is to get causeless one-pointed devotion to You.

There is a liking to do bhajan.
nāma sādhakera ahaituki kṛṣṇa bhakti binā anya kāmanā nahi A Nama sadhaka has no desire other than unadulterated devotional service to Krsna. The root cause of all the 4 kinds of anarthas (svarupa brahma, asat-trishna, hrday-daurbalya and aparadh) is Svarupa brahma – illusion about one’s spiritual identity. My real nature is I am the eternal servant of Lord Krsna. I have transcendental nature (cinmay svarupa). But being bewildered by the external potency of the Lord (maya) I think I am this body. As long as this illusion remains till such time asat-trishna, thirst for that which is unreal i.e. material enjoyment will remain. When I think I am this body, then bodily necessities are not my necessities, it can’t be. Because of this thought I am this body there is desire for unreal temporary material enjoyments. So, by thinking I am this body comes weakness of heart and always worries for the body because it is perishable, and also offenses at the Lotus Feet of Guru, Vaishnav and Bhagavan occur. So the root cause is misconception of the self, forgetfulness that I am of the Lord. Any time offenses may occur and the root cause of all this is svarupa brahma, misidentification of self.
Misconception of self is the root cause of all evil desires, ulterior desires. Where from all these desires are coming? It is because of misconception of self. I have forgotten my own self. For that reason so many desires have come. If we want to uproot those desires from the heart we have to get knowledge of our own self. I am actually eternally related to Supreme Lord Sri Krsna, His eternal servant. When I am enveloped by the illusory energy I think I am this body, subtle or gross body, I shall have desires, all non-eternal desires, then there cannot be any actual devotional practice. ‘Devotional Practice’ every time we are hearing about this. When you will be completely reinstated in your real self then there will be no other desires. You will do whatever necessary for the satisfaction of Krsna. Krsna’s satiation is the ultimate goal there. There cannot be any mistake when we will have realization of our real self. When you forget it all these desires will come and actual devotional practice you cannot do, actual Harinam you cannot do. For that reason so emphatically it is said unless you have got all the devotion to Sri Krsna, you will have ulterior desires and you cannot do Harinam correctly.
Caitanya Mahaprabhu is giving His instructions to all, His teachings and instructions. You have to remember this for attaining eternal benefit.
na dhanaṁ na janaṁ na sundarīṁ
kavitāṁ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye
mama janmani janmanīśvare
bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukḥ tvayi
(4rd Verse of Sri Shikshastaka)“Hey Jagadish, I do not want wealth, I do not want manpower, I do not want erudition, education. I am in this material world, I consider this body and the bodily relations as mine, I have wife, children. Without wanting wealth how will I maintain my family? I have practical difficulty. Is it not? They talk all impracticable things in Gaudiya Math. But, this(line of thinking) is not correct.
Mahaprabhu gave teaching through Srivas Pandit. You should remember the biography of Srivas Pandit, personal associates book (Sri Caitanya: His Life & Associates) has already been printed. You go through it. There you will find Srivas Pandit. When Mahaprabhu left Navadvip dhama and took sannyas, Srivas Pandit who is the incarnation of Sri Narada Gosvami in Krsna lila, in great separation grief could not live there where everything was full of painful reminders of the Lord. He went to Kumarahatta, near Halisahar Station on the banks of Ganga, which is the appearance place of Sri Ishvara Puripad. He cries in great separation grief from Mahaprabhu. His brothers Sriram Pandit, Srikant Pandit, his wife all cry for Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Mahaprabhu is Supersoul residing within the hearts of all and knows all. Seeing their pain He arrived along with His associates to Srivas Pandit’s house. All the members of the household were very happy. They were already in bliss and in the association of Mahaprabhu and that ‘Ananda’ Supreme Bliss came there in person. All of them got absorbed in service of the Lord and His associates day and night. Mahaprabhu thought Srivas Pandit is a householder, not a renunciate. If he is engaged in sadhu-seva day and night how will he maintain the family? He has a large family and so he has to earn some money for livelihood, for maintaining the family. This is not correct. A householder cannot go to beg. So, He called Srivas Pandit and he came before Mahaprabhu. Mahaprabhu said, ‘You are a householder. So you have to work and earn some money. You are not a renunciate. If you engage yourself in serving devotees day and night how will your family will be maintained? ‘ Then Srivas Pandit made three clapping sounds with his hands. What is the significance of this, Mahaprabhu asked. Why you have made three clapping sounds? Srivas Pandit answered ‘I shall remain without food today, again another day, and third day, and after third day I shall jump into the Ganges and finish my body.’ Mahaprabhu said, ‘You will die without food? Even if the Goddess of Fortune Lakshmi Devi has to go begging, you will never know want in your home.’ Because he has firm faith that Supreme Lord is the sustainer and the maintainer of all. His mood is Mahaprabhu is the sustainer and the maintainer of the whole Universe, so why should I earn for livelihood? My duty is to serve the Lord. So Mahaprabhu declared loudly if Lakshmiji, presiding deity of wealth has to earn money because of difficulty of money, there will be no difficulty in your house. Why, because you have firm belief that Krsna is the sustainer and maintainer, the only protector and nobody else. We cannot do like him. Is not the Lord Sustainer and Maintainer of all? That Lord has arrived, He is the Sustainer and Maintainer of Infinite Universes (brahmandas), so what is the need for me to worry about me and my family’s maintanenance. My duty is to serve Him. Therefore, Mahaprabhu loudly declared, ‘If Lakshmiji, the presiding deity of wealth, has to earn money, she has difficulty of money, theree will be no difficulty in your house.” Why? Because he has firm belief that Krishna is the Sustainer and Maintainer, the only Protector of us all. Actually He is giving, that sort of belief is there, then everything will come automatically. ‘yoga-ksemam vahamy aham’ i.e. I personally assume the whole responsibility of acquiring and protecting the necessities of My fully dependent devotees, there is nothing to worry.
So, just say I am surrendered to You, I want to serve You, and all other things will follow automatically. Until you surrender to the Lord and desire for the temporary non-eternal material things of this world, you will face distress and pain always and you will not be able to worship Lord nor chant His Holy Names. If you chant Holy Names with ulterior motive then those ulterior desires will be fulfilled, you will not get association of the Lord.
So, ‘O Supreme Lord, I do not want wealth, manpower or material knowledge, jada vidya mayar vaibhav. What is the use of that knowledge that does not take you to the Lord? Real knowledge is that which leads to devotion to the Lord. I do not want salvation, liberation from birth and death. My only prayer is to get causeless one-pointed devotion to You, birth after birth.’ If we do this prayer from the core of the heart that very moment Lord will remove all worries and distress we are undergoing, and everything becomes blissful. You will wonder from where you are getting this bliss. When Lord gives He gives bountiful. But we do not have belief.
griha dravya śiṣya paśu dhānya ādi dhana
strī putra dāsa dāsī kuṭumbādi janaWife, children, servants, maid servants and other relatives all come under ‘jana’ (manpower). House, material things inside the house, making disciples with worldly motives, or for one’s own sense-enjoyment, domestic animals, desire for paddy, crops & grains, whatever we desire other than in relation to Lord are all material sense-enjoyment. When we engage all these in the service of the Lord then they will not be considered material.
kāvya alaṅkāra ādi sundarī kavitā
pārthiva-viṣaya madhye e saba vāratā
ei saba pāibāra āśā nāhi kari
śuddha-bhakti deha more kṛṣṇa kṛpā kariHere ‘suddha’ is added as prefix to bhakti, to mean if devotion is with ulterior motives then it is not ‘bhakti’.
premera svabhāva yāṅhā premera sambandha
sei māne kṛṣṇe mora nāhi bhakti-gandhaIndication of Midday Pastimes of Sri Sri Radha-Krsna:
madhyāhne ‘nyonya saṁgodita vividha-vikārādi-bhūṣāpramugdhau
vāmyotkaṇṭhātilolau smaramakha lalitā dyāli-narmāptaśātau
dolāraṇyāmbu-vaṁśī-hṛti-rati-madhupānārka-pūjādi-līlau
rādhā-kṛṣṇau satṛṣṇau parijana-ghaṭayā sevyamānau smarāmi
(Sri Govinda-lilamrta)Gopis are always engaged in bringing about Radha-Krsna’s union and the transcendental ecstatic feelings that manifest in Radha-kunda during Their meeting at mid-day is the highest which do not manifest at any other period of pastimes. So Radha-kund pastimes are the Supreme. There are eight principal ecstatic feelings (astasattvik vikar), thirty-three kinds of other subordinate ecstatic feelings called sanchari, and various extraordinary ecstatic feelings which are like ornaments making the pastimes more beautiful, blissful and enchanting, like Vamya, Utkantha, etc. which two three days before we have discussed here. But we should not view them on the same level as the activities of this material world. Here also there are swings like in fairs, exhibitions, also in Jassora fair where people go round and round and enjoy. It is not like that there. ‘Krsnendriya priti vancha dhare prema nama, atmendriya priti vanca tare bale kama.’ There is gulf of difference between the two as much between sky and earth. Whatever we do in this material world is to please our senses or to please the senses of the persons related to us. This is ‘kama’ lust. All the activities in this world are propelled by lust. In the transcendental world it looks like lust, but it is just the opposite because everything there is for the pleasure of Krsna. There is not even scent of lust though there are jokes and laughter (hasya-parihas). All of them are for giving pleasure to Krsna. We have to understand the criterion. In this world also we find all these things, sports, to get worldly happiness. We may think that, that transcendental world is similar to this world. It is directly opposite. There everything that they do is for the satisfaction of Krsna, for His satisfaction only and nothing else.
nā gaṇi āpana-duḥkha, sabe vāñchi tāṅra sukha,
tāṅra sukha — āmāra tātparya
more yadi diyā duḥkha, tāṅra haila mahā-sukha,
sei duḥkha — mora sukha-varyaI will not consider my own interest, satisfaction – Radharani’s words. I only want Krsna’s contentment, my purpose is His satisfaction. If by giving suffering to me, Krsna becomes very happy, that distress to me will be my highest contentment. Whatever a pure devotee does is all for the satisfaction of Krsna and is not with any other motive, not to derive any material pleasures. They do not anything for their pleasure. Their center of interest is different, diametrically opposite. Their only endeavor is to satisfy Krsna. They do not consider their own difficulty. And all the devotees want that we shall have contact with the Object of our Worship. But if Krsna does not fulfill their desire, Krsna wants something else then they want whatever Krsna wants we should submit to that, we do not want our own satisfaction. If I am deprived of seeing Krsna, if that is the desire of Krsna, then that should be fulfilled. I do not consider my own interest. Interest is only Krsna’s satisfaction. That is called Goloka Vrndavan. So there is no quarrel there, the root of all quarrels and clashing is eradicated completely.
But here everybody has got his own personal interest, group interest or personal interest. Any moment there may be clashing, there may be forest fire, conflagration. The whole world is engulfed with conflagration, forest fire. Because of this, for their own personal interest, that is their target. So you should not consider this equal to this. This is the highest transcendental realm. Whatever these drinking of sweet honey (madhupan), stealing of flute (vamsi haran), pleasant strolling in the forest (vana vihar), water sports in ponds and rivers (jala keli), swinging festival (dola khela), whatever, here it is written, it is not like in this world that they are enjoying. Everything is for the satisfaction of Krsna and not for their own interest. And when Krsna is satisfied all will have actual satisfaction. Like watering the root of the tree the whole tree is nourished, giving food to the stomach all the sense organs are satisfied, by serving Achyuta Sri Hari all are served. In reality all will become pleased, heart will be composed, steady and peaceful, otherwise not peaceful. In the name of the Lord if sense-enjoyment is resorted to, then there will be clashing there. In the material world one may deceive another, but one cannot deceive the Lord. If we serve with some other ulterior motive then also there will be clashing. But when doing as service to the Lord there cannot be any possibility of clashing. How can we understand that realm? All these are not similar to these worldly sports what we are doing here. We cannot understand this, there is difficulty because we have got this sort of ignorance that I am this body and bodily interest is my interest. As long as that ignorance is there we cannot be able to understand this. There gopis serve Sri Sri Radha-Krsna in this manner. If we attain the mercy of the gopis then we will also attain this. Caitanya Mahaprabhu taking the mood of Radharani appeared to give that same love of the Lord to this world. If we take shelter of the Lotus Feet of Mahaprabhu sincerely then we will also attain entrance to that Supremely Blissful realm which is the most purified state.
