Prepare Yourself for His Advent
Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj
Srila Gurudev emphasizes on removing all the desires from the heart other than Krishna's service. He narrates various topics like, Haridas Thakur’s grace on the infantrymen signifying the strength and power of Vaishnava’s grace, eligibility for staying in Dham and who can have real darshan of Dham, how Krishna’s advent is not like the birth of any ordinary enslaved jiva, the anarthas we have in our heart and how to remove them and the significance of Gundicha-marjan.
-
No one can enter in Vrindavan-Dham without the grace of Lord Vrindavan-chandra's personal associates. If someone has committed an offence, he cannot enter in Vrindavan. How will he be able to enter? It will be possible only by the grace of Vaishnava. Vaishnava's grace is topmost and anything can be possible by it. Haridas Thakur was cruelly flogged with a cane in twenty two markets by infantrymen. Supreme Lord was eager to appear to protect him. But Haridas Thakur prayed to Him, “These infantrymen do not have any knowledge about what they are doing. Please be merciful on them. Do not take their offence.” The grace of Vaishnava is so strong that though Lord Himself had come to punish them but as Haridas Thakur prayed for them, Supreme Lord did not take any action against them.
It is been said, jaha kaam taha nahi rama, ravi rajni mile nahi ektham—as day and night cannot exist together, if a votary has material desires in his heart, Supreme Lord does not appear there. Sun and darkness cannot exist together. Wherever there is a presence of desires to satisfy our own senses, Supreme Lord, His holy abode, His form, qualities and associates will never manifest. Externally, we are in Vrindavan-Dham but actually we have not got any contact with Vrindavan-Dham yet.
Tomorrow, Krishna will appear. He appears in Mathura. By the influence of Yogamaya, Vasudeva takes Him to Gokula from Mathura and brings Yogamaya to Mathura. Sri Rupa Goswami has written, vaikuṇṭhāj janito varā madhu-purī—the holy place Mathura is spiritually superior to Vaikuntha because Supreme Lord appears there. Though, He is Supreme Lord Himself, He takes birth to award His service to Devaki-Vasudeva and Yashoda-Nanda Maharaj in parental mood. He appears by accepting them as His parents. Dasharath Maharaj and Kaushalya Devi do not give birth to Ramchandra. Nanda Maharaj and Yashoda or Vasudeva and Devaki do not give birth to Krishna. By the prayers of Devaki and Vasudeva, He accepts to appear as their son. First He appears as four-handed Nayaran, holding a conch shell, disc, club and lotus in His hands. He does not come out from mother's womb like an ordinary child. By the request of Vasudeva and Devaki He then takes the two handed form as Krishna.
Krishna performs His childhood pastimes in Gokula. Everything resides in Him. Nothing is outside Him. Superior to Mathura is the transcendental forest of Vrindavan, because of Krishna's rasa-lila pastimes. And Govardhan is superior to Vrindavan and superior to Govardhan is the super-excellent Radhakunda which stands supreme because of the mellows of the pastimes performed there. Even today, Krishna is performing His Pastimes in Vrindavan. His pastimes are going on continuously. It is written in Chaitanya Charitamrita, ‘adyapi sei lila kare krsna-ray, kono kono bhagyavane dekhivare paya’ — Sri Krishna is performing His pastimes even today also but only the fortunate ones could behold them. He is performing His pastimes today also, but a person like me who has material desires, desires other than Sri Krishna filled in his heart, is bereft of beholding them. Such a person, even being in Vrindavan, will be deprived of that vision and for them Vrindavan is covered by Maya—the external potency of Supreme Lord Sri Krishna.
Once a person asked Bhaktivinoda Thakur, “Nabadwip Dham is non-different from Gauranga Mahaprabhu—the manifestation of magnanimity. He rescued many fallen soul here. His abode (Dham) is also merciful like Him. But then why many people, even while staying in the Dham perform abominable acts?”
Bhaktivinoda Thakur replied, “Supreme Lord has innumerable potencies, amongst them three are the main—antaranga (internal potency), bahiranga (material/external potency) and tatastha. The holy abodes like Vaikuntha, Goloka-Vrindavan manifest from the internal potency (also called chida-shakti) of the Lord. This material world comes from the external potency of the Lord. It is a prison house for conditional souls who have forgotten Krishna and have desires for sensual enjoyment. They tremendously suffer from three kinds of miseries. This external potency also belongs to Supreme Lord only, it is non-different from Him, but it is vimukh-mohini (mahamaya)—the potency which envelops the jivas and makes them averse to the Supreme Lord, fully engrossed in this material world. The other one is unmukha-toshani (antaranga-shakti)—the internal potency in the form of shuddha-bhakta (pure devotees) who take those jivas to the Supreme Lord who are inclined to Him. Supreme Lord's name, form, attributes, pastimes and associates are non-different from each other. They all reside in Him. His abode is non-different from Him. Out of illusion, a person who is averse to the Supreme Lord may also think that he is staying in Vrindavan and is in contact with the Dham but actually he is not in contact. He is outside the Dham. Dham is covered by Lord's external potency. Such a person remains in that illusory covering and performs all the abominable acts. The holy abode of the Supreme Lord is transcendental and everything there, every object which is used for the service of Krishna is also transcendental.”
We have heard about it on the advent day of Baladeva. Baladeva serves Lord Krishna by assuming ten forms, the Lord’s umbrella, flute, slippers, bedding, pillow, garments, easy chair, residence, sacred thread and throne. Lord's residence, the house is also transcendental, it can walk and also can talk. Common people do not believe this, how a house can talk? They think we are speaking a lie. With our material eyes, we see it as a common material house, but everything there is transcendental. The house is also transcendental and can talk. The flute is also transcendental. The flute of the Lord appeared as Vamsivadanananda Thakur to enrich Mahaprabhu's pastime taking the form of a human. He is non-different from the flute; he walks, and talks and does all the activities.
Everything is transcendental there, and by extending His potency Balaram serves Krishna—satta-vistarini-shakti. All the objects meant for the service of Krishna, are Baladeva-tattva. Even the deity (vigrah) of Krishna is also Baladeva-tattva. Baladeva is sandhini-shakti-matta-vigrah, Krishna is samvita-shakti-matta-vigrah and Radharani is hladini-shakti-matta-vigrah. So these are the three primeval potencies of the Lord—sandhini, samvita and hladini. Here, in the Dham everything belongs to Krishna and is transcendental. We cannot enter in Dham with this gross material body. Only with the transcendental body, one can enter in the transcendental realm.
Now, what should we do on Adhivasa Tithi? Adhivasa is a preliminary function before the main function. Tomorrow, Supreme Lord will appear so we have to make ourselves ready for it. Supreme Lord is equal to all. He has bestowed grace upon Dhruva, Prahald and Amrish Maharaj and He would not bestow grace upon me, it is not like that. Supreme Lord says in Gita,
samo ’haṁ sarva-bhūteṣu
na me dveṣyo ’sti na priyaḥ
ye bhajanti tu māṁ bhaktyā
mayi te teṣu cāpy aham
(Srimad Bhagavad Gita 9.29)“I am equal to all. I envy no one. But whoever renders service unto Me in devotion is a friend, is in Me and also I am in him.’
Tomorrow is the advent day of Krishna, we have heard from our Guruvarga that Krishna's advent pastime is eternal. Supreme Lord comes to rescue the fallen souls of the Brahmanda. There are infinite Brahmandas and Supreme Lord’s manifestations are also infinite. There are infinite Vaikunthas and infinite jivas, everything of Him is infinite. No one can comprehend Him fully. If anybody can comprehend Him fully then His name ‘anant—infinite’ will not have any meaning. How many Vaikunthas do you know about? We have heard a very little about them from the scriptures. There are infinite Vaikunthas in which He performs His pastimes in infinite forms. Now, here in this universe He going to perform His appearance pastimes, after appearance He will play the pastimes of an infant, then childhood pastimes and then youth pastimes. There are infinite pastimes. One pastime finishes in this universe and immediately that pastime will start in another universe; this will continue without any interruption. Therefore, it is called nitya-lila—eternal pastimes. There is one more meaning of nitya-lila, we have heard from our Guruvarga which we need to understand. Tomorrow, Supreme Lord will bless someone, a devotee with pure heart, by appearing in his heart. He will reveal Himself in someone’s heart tomorrow. And what happens when the Lord appears?
yasmin jñāte sarvam idaṁ vijñātaṁ bhavanti
yasmin prapte sarvam idaṁ praptam bhavanti
(Mundaka Upanishada 1.3)“By knowing and gaining whom we know and gain everything.”
yaṁ labdhvā cāparaṁ lābhaṁ manyate nādhikaṁ tataḥ yasmin sthito na duḥkhena guruṇāpi vicālyate
(Bhagavad Gita 6.22)“Upon gaining whom, nothing remains to be gained further. Being situated in such a position, one is never shaken, even in the midst of the greatest difficulty.”
He is the Supreme Lord Himself and when Supreme Lord descends, there cannot exist of any problem. Until the time He has not descended, we have all the difficulties. And in whose heart will He descend? It is written by Vedavyas Muni in the fourth canto of Srimad Bhagavatam, before the starting of Dhruva-charitra. Shivaji, who is our guru, has said about this,
sattvam viśuddham vasudeva-śabditam
yad īyate tatra pumān apāvrtah
sattve ca tasmin bhagavān vāsudevo
hy adhokṣajo me namasā vidhīyate“I offer my obeisances to the Supreme Lord Vāsudeva who manifests only in the sanctified pure heart which is called Vasudeva.”
Lord Vāsudeva appears accepting Vasudeva. And who is Vasudeva? A sanctified pure heart devoid of any vanity is Vasudeva. Our heart can be sanctified by the grace of Balaram who kills Dhenukasura which represents our misconception of self. We misidentify ourselves with the material body and get engaged in various kinds of sinful and abominable acts. I have forgotten who I am. Who is the Absolute truth and what relation I have got with Him? I have forgotten the original form of the Holy name, the form of the Absolute Truth and the original form of myself. I have forgotten what the goal of life is and what is the path to achieve that goal? Everything I have forgotten like a dumb donkey. By achieving material knowledge, one does not become a scholar. Bhaktivinoda Thakur writes in one of his Kirtan,
jaḍa-vidyā jata māyāra vaibhava
tomāra bhajane bādhā
moha janamiyā anitya saṁsāre
jīvake karaye gāḍha“All sorts of material knowledge are variegated forms of your illusory energy which creates impediments on the path of your worship. Such knowledge creates attachment for these perishable worldly relations and makes an ass out of the living entity.”
What is the use of that material knowledge by which I have become averse to the Supreme Lord, I have forgotten my relation with Him and got entangled in the perishable objects of this material world and completely engrossed in ignorance. One who possesses only material knowledge and depriving himself of the transcendental knowledge, his condition is exactly like a donkey who carries the heavy burden of the non-eternal, material world on its back. Lord Baladeva appears to kill that ass, Dhenukasara, which is residing in us. Without the grace of Baladeva, how is it possible to kill Dhenukasura? There is one more demon who resides along with Dhenukasura in our heart, Pralambasura. Pralambasura is a symbol of illicit sexual connection, aspiration for gain, adoration (labha-puja) and name and fame (pratishtha). Unless and until these traits which are signified by Pralambasura are not destroyed, the Supreme Lord will not descend in our heart. Till the time our heart is impure, He will not descend.
On one occasion in Agartala, I remembered the verse recited by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu,
niṣkiṣcanasya bhagavad-bhajanonmukhasya
pāram param jigamisor bhava-sāgarasya
sandarśanam visayinām atha yositām ca
hā hanta hanta visa-bhakṣanato ’py asādhu
(Chaitanya Charitamrita Madya 11.8 from Sri Chaitanya Chandrodaya Nataka 8.23)We have taken shelter of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and He Himself has said the above verse. We came here to perform haribhajan by leaving everything, body and bodily relations and material desires. For a niṣkiṣcana—a person who has renounced the material world to perform haribhajan and to cross over the ocean of nescience, it is very dangerous, even more than consuming poison, to be in contact with material sense objects with a desire of enjoying them or to become intimately related with women. By consuming poison, one may lose his body only, but if the poison of material enjoyment enters one's heart then he would be in a great trouble for life after life. If such desires are then in the heart then he will be born again in this world. You have left everything with a desire to engage all your senses in the service of the Supreme Lord. You have observed the appearance day of Lord Baladeva, but Pralambasura is still residing in your heart, desire for illicit sex, the desires for non-eternal, is still there so you will not get the desired fruit until your heart becomes pure. Lord will not appear there. So for one who wants to cross over the ocean of nescience, he should refrain himself from the desire of enjoying material sense objects. We should always remember the last instruction of our Gurudev. If you pocket the money you have got from others for the service of the Supreme Lord then that money will make you fall into a ditch. You have come here to perform bhajan under the shelter of Supreme Lord; will Supreme Lord not protect you? Why you should preserve money for yourself? If you go to an ordinary person of this world and serve him without asking anything, not even food for yourself, then how many days that person will remain silent, he will surely think about you before having his meal, “How can I eat without giving him food, he is serving me so sincerely”. He will surely offer food to you and will say, “Please have it.” Even a bad person of this world cannot remain thinking about you, if you serve him sincerely without asking anything. He himself will take care of your requirements, food, clothes etc. Even a worldly person, not even a good person, if you take the shelter of a bad person of this world, he will protect you then if you take shelter of Supreme Lord who is the master of infinite universes and opulence will He not protect you? If, on the name of Lord, we pocket things for ourselves then where is the sharanagati, surrender? Our Guruvarga, Sanatan Goswami has given us instruction through his servant Ishana, though Ishana did not carry gold coins for himself, he brought it for the service of Sanatan Goswami. Ishana had brought eight gold coins with him. But when Sanatan Goswami asked, “Do you have anything valuable with you?” Then he replied, “I have seven gold coins with me.” Sanatan Goswami gave those gold coins to the landlord. The landlord told to Sanatan Goswami, “Before you offered them, I already knew that there were eight coins in your servant's possession. It is very good that you have voluntarily offered them to me; otherwise I would have killed you and taken your coins. I am now relieved from such sinful activity.” Sanatan Goswami did not trust his words since there is no guarantee in the mind-set of a malicious person. He chastised his servant Ishana, “saṅge kene āniyācha ei kāla-yama?”—why have you brought this death knell with you? What is the teaching our Guru Sanatan Goswami giving here? We do not think about it. He told Ishana, “You have given seven gold coins, one coin you have kept with you, do you still believe that gold coin will protect you? Being a renunciate, if you come with such a mindset then everything will be futile, you will not get success. Take the coin and return to your house. You are not fit and competent to renounce the house.”
We can do many things secretly, but the Supreme Lord sees everything, He is omniscient and omnipotent. He knows everything; you cannot do any abominable or good act hiding from Him. When the Supreme Lord is there to protect and maintain us then why do we have to fear? Supreme Lord tries to give whatever is the necessity for a devotee, yoga-kṣemaṁ vahāmy aham. But a devotee does want to take any service from the Lord, his only desire is to serve Him. So, today you have to sanctify your heart. You have to remove whatever desires you have in your heart related to the non-eternal material things. Mahaprabhu has instructed us this through Gundicha Marjan Pastimes. You want to make Jagannath sit in our heart, you go to have His darshan, and you pull the chariot to bring Him to Gundicha. If you want to make Him sit in your heart then you have to make your heart Vrindavan, "mora man mora nahi, mora man vrindavan" — my heart is now not with me it has become Vrindavan. Jagannath is Krishna Himself, He will come and sit in Gundicha, so you have to clean Gundicha. Gundicha represents your heart. We clean it externally but inside we have so many desires other than Krishna. We want material benefits after death by performing karmakanda—fruitive activities. We have desire to get salvation and perfections. We want name and fame. So many things are there in our heart. With the help of the broom, throw everything out from your heart. Clean the temple of your heart, Jagannath will come in that temple of your heart. Perform Gundicha Mandir Marjan with Sankirtan. Perform Sankirtan without tenfold offence. Today we should perform Sankirtan.
