Sri Baladev Prabhu is the eighth avatar of the Dasavatar. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, is the fountainhead of all avataras. His first expansion, Sri Baladeva—the original Sankarshana (Mula-Sankarshana), has the form of a cowherd boy in Vraja and that of a kshatriya in Dvarakapuri. Sri Baladev, who is the Deity of the sandhini potency, serves Krishna in His five forms of Maha-Sankarshana, Karanodakashayi, Garbhodakashayi, Kshirodakashayi, and Shesh. In the shruti (Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad 3.2.4) it is said: ‘nāyamātmā balahīnena labhyaḥ’—‘Without the grace of Baladeva, no one can get God’. Sri Baladeva is the original spiritual master.
